"Big Data" is a term that covers a lot of topics.
These can be grouped in two basic categories.
1) Huge collections of unstructured data such as images, entire documents, sound files, and Twitter feeds to name a few.
2) The other category is the systems used for storage and processing.
Hadoop is the most well known of these systems. This is a distributed storage and distributed processing that can use hundreds of low cost comuputers to mesh together to essentially make one super computer.
